It allows family and friends a place to re-visit, interact with each other, share and enhance this tribute for future generations. Cynthia Leigh Ward Skaggs was born in Kansas City, KS on Nov. 5, 1958 to Dr. James and Donna Ward. She was the first of four daughters. Cindy grew up in Belleville, KS where her father was a family doctor. She loved riding along with her father for house calls and would proudly carry her father’s black medical bag. As early as third grade, she decided that she wanted to be a doctor. She graduated from Belleville High School in 1977 and Pittsburg State University in 1981. She went on to attend University of Kansas School of Medicine in Kansas City and Wichita, graduating in 1985; she received her residency training through Wesley Family Practice residing in Wichita, KS. While attending college, she met her future husband and fellow Pittsburg State student, Jay Skaggs while working on a Homecoming float. They would later date and then return for PSU Homecoming where Jay proposed. Jay and Cindy were married June 7, 1986 at First Methodist Church of Belleville. They were blessed with three children; Jennifer Ann, Clayton James and Samantha Marie. Cindy loved being a wife and mother. Cindy began her medical practice in northeast Wichita in 1988 and then relocated to Derby in 1992 where she practiced until her passing. She loved being a Family Doctor and believed that it was a calling, not just a job. In August 2014, when she was diagnosed with stage 4 Inflammatory Breast Cancer, Cindy decided to share her cancer journey on a Caring Bridge blog. She was amazed and humbled by the outpouring of love and support that she received from family, friends, co-workers and patients. She is survived by her husband Jay Skaggs, their three children, mother, Donna Ward; sisters, Cathy Ward, Caryl Geschwind and Connie Hulst. and her two fuzzy four legged kids; Mocha and Charlie.

A guest book will be available Friday, August 4, 2017 from 1-8 pm, at Smith Family Mortuary in Derby, the family will be present to greet friends from 5-7 pm.

A memorial service will be held at 10 am, Saturday, August 5, 2017 at Woodlawn United Methodist Church 431 S. Woodlawn Blvd. Derby, KS 67037. Memorials have been established with Woodlawn Methodist Church and Victory in the Valley.
