Obituary for Frank Schmidt

Franklin "Frank" Schmidt,81, passed away peacefully at home Monday January 22,2018. He was born to Julius and Anna Schmidt November 3, 1936. Frank served as a liaison officer with NATO during the Cuban Missile Crisis. While in training for the Air Force, he met Glenda Nelson. They married July 18,1964, and had four children Julie, Brian, Heather and Christopher. He attended Columbia University, and earned an honorary Design Engineering degree. Frank then went to work for Coleman, designing camping and outdoor equipment for them. He held 17 patents, and designed the inside of both the Utah and Atlanta Olympic torch. He loved trains, was involved in cub scouts, boy scouts, he also coached t ball and soccer.Frank was also part of the booster club bringing athlete photo buttons to Mulvane High School. Frank was also a great photographer. Frank and Glenda also formed a Square Dancing Club that met weekly at St. Michael's. He found a faithful friend, "Brisco" at the Humane Society. Brisco was adopted at 7 and spent 7 more years at Frank's side. He was an outgoing and interesting character, who will be greatly missed. Frank is preceded in death by his parents.Julius and Anna Schmidt; son, Christopher Glen Schmidt. He is survived by wife, Glenda Schmidt; daughter, Julie (Warren) Owens; son, Brian Schmidt; daughter, Heather Kelly; grandchildren, Jordan (William) Bird, Ryan Owens, Brett Kelly, Sydney Kelly; great grandchildren, Korie and Charlie Bird; sister in law, Nancy (Steve) Paulin and more friends than could be mentioned. Visitation: Thursday, January 25,2018 1-8 pm family greeting friends 5-7 pm at Smith Mortuary 501 E Louis Blvd, Mulvane, KS 67110.
