76, died quietly at her home in Kansas City, MO on Wednesday, April 25, 2018. She was born June 1, 1941 to Cecil and Ruth (Menoher) Smith in Wichita, KS. Elaine was a proud 1959 graduate of Wichita West High School. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, photography; and was particularly proud of her business, Elaine Backman Resume & Secretarial Services. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Stephen Smith and sister-in-law, Evelyn; former-husband, Dale Spoeneman; beloved partner, K. Julien "Hawk" McElwain; and cats, Meeko, Percy, and Patches. Elaine is survived by her brother, Joel (Karen) Smith; sister, Suzanne Smith; nephew, Leroy Smith; niece, Leanne (Brad) Jameson and their children, Emily, Trinity, and Hope; former husband, Michael Backman and his children, Robyn Backman, Sherri Backman Hughes, Leslye Backman Morita, Sandi Backman Skinner, Bill Backman, and Michael Backman; and cats, Lola Marie and Syracuse. Visitation: Sunday, April 29, 2018, from 2 to 4 pm at Culbertson-Smith Mortuary, 115 S. Seneca, Wichita, KS 67213. Graveside Service: 11 am, Monday, April 30, 2018 at Waco Cemetery, 500 W. 95th St. S., Haysville, KS 67060. In lieu of flowers, please plant something beautiful in your yard or on your balcony.
