A Great Neighbor

I moved to this neighborhood about 9 years ago during a difficult time in my life.  Not long after I moved in, Corky made and painted the cutest little birdhouse and gave it to me as a gift from him and his sweet next-door neighbor, June.  That gesture meant more than he'd ever know and it hung on the same tree for those 9 years until the tree was snapped in half in a storm this summer.  It stayed on my porch the rest of the summer, but I already know where I'm going to put it next Spring.  I remember the first winter that my pipes froze and I was a little panicked, so Corky got an SOS call, saying "Help!  What do I need to do?!"  Of course, he knew what to do, as I knew he would.  It wasn't the only time I asked for home advice either.  Corky was one of those guys who just knew stuff about a lot of "stuff".  He'd often swing by for a chat on his riding lawn mower if I was working outdoors.  We always had plenty to talk about and I could talk his leg off if we both had the time.  I'm prettty independant and try to do most of own outdoor work, including some landscaping projects.  I may go about things in an unorthodox way at times, or huff and puff as I struggle with something or do it in a way that could probably be done a lot more efficiently.  I'm sure I provided him with lots of comic relief!  I could just picture him looking out the window sometimes, shaking his head and saying "Just what in the heck is she trying to do out there?", but he never mentioned a word.  We have lots of pecan trees around here, but mine is hit and miss.  I remember once, after a few days of "hunt & peck", I knew he felt bad for me and commented that my back had to get tired from all of that, even though I assured him I didn't mind it.  The next day, he showed up with a big Folger's can filled to the top with pecans and gave them to me.  He was my one-of-a kind, irreplacable, generous, big-hearted neighbor and it's not going to the be same without him.
